Love at the Brewery- An Engagement Photoshoot at Brassneck, Vancouver
I met this lovely couple through their Wedding Planner, a previous boudoir client of mine. Hannah booked me to do her wedding day makeup and hair, and she and Alex also hired myself and Sean to do wedding photography for their big day. Since they bundled wedding day makeup, hair and photography, a complementary engagement photoshoot was in order!
I knew right away after meeting these two that I wanted to capture their quirky sense of humour and authentic love story. Alex had a contact at Brassneck Brewery in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood, which I’ve always thought would be a cool place to shoot in with its natural wooden walls and cozy vibe. It definitely exceeded my expectations.
The staff at Brassneck were lovely (thanks Meg!) and let us go wherever we wanted in the space before they opened up for the day. We even got to shoot inside the beer fridges for a little bit before we all got too cold.
After getting some beer tasters (obvs) it didn’t take long before Alex and Hannah seemed to forget about the cameras as they told stories about how they met and fell in love, as well as their time in the theatre and working on film and TV projects. Their charming meet-cute story involved an acting class, and an accidentally flung hot beverage which left Alex with quite the burn in his pants region. I felt like I was just capturing candid photos of them on a casual afternoon date, taking advantage of the natural light coming in from the big front windows.
As we moved deeper into the tasting room and set up for a card game in the back booth, I used my brand shiny new flash to get some nice flash photography of these two teasing each other and just being goofy. The string lights over the booth also helped give these photos a nice warm glow that complimented the natural wood setting.
Hannah and Alex were game to keep trying new places within the brewery, and I got some more flash photography shots at the back of the room. Some of my favourites were the candid shots of them kissing while Hannah sat on a barrel in the hallway.
We found a cool storeroom in the back of the brewery, as well as the huge vats where they make all the beer. There were so many old barrels and natural light that made for another really great setting for more candid photos.
When we got back to the front of the tasting room, that’s where I got the shots that I love the most from this engagement photoshoot. After taking some more natural light shots inside, I ran out to the street and shot Alex and Hannah through the big front window, sending them instructions on how to pose over the phone. The end result was some lovely and candid photos of them looking over a script and just being cozy with each other. So cute!
The photoshoot flew by - we were having so much fun by the end that we suddenly realized it was time for us to go so Brassneck could open up. Thank you Alex and Hannah for a great day, and we can’t wait to see you again for your wedding!
